Paper Mill Sale

Workers at Park Falls paper mill must reapply for jobs with sale

A union leader says a deal by an Ohio company to buy a Fraser Papers mill in Park Falls, Wisconsin calls for its 350 workers to lose their jobs in 60 days. But the president of the union local says the workers can reapply with the new owner. Dan Detko says it's better than the company closing the mill. SMART Papers LLC of Hamilton, Ohio, announced yesterday it had agreed to buy the paper mill from Toronto-based Fraser Papers Incorporated as a way to expand its production of high quality paper products. SMART Papers CEO Tim Needham says the deal is expected to close in less than 60 days. No terms were disclosed. Needham says today that letters with applications would be going out to all mill workers soon. He says plans are to operate the mill at full capacity.
