Winner dedicates Golden Globe to Leelah Alcorn

FOX19 -

The memory of Leelah Alcorn lived on Sunday night as a Golden Globe winner dedicated an award to the Warren County transgender teen.

“Transparent” creator Jill Soloway acknowledged Leelah in an acceptance speech for Best Television Series.

"This award is dedicated to the memory of Leelah Alcorn and too many trans people who die too young,” Soloway said.

Transparent is an Amazon original series about a California father's transition from a man to woman. Jeffrey Tambor took home an award for his lead role in the show.

In Soloway's acceptance speech, she said she hopes ‘Transparent' will “teach the world something about authenticity, truth and love.”

Alcorn was struck and killed while walking on I-71 the morning of Dec. 28. News of her death spread worldwide after it was revealed that she kept a blog detailing her experience as a transgender teen. Her story sparked initiatives on social media including a petition to ban conversion therapy and a fund for a local memorial.
