CINCINNATI (FOX19) -

A Duke Energy outage left more than 3,000 people without power on Monday and forced Northwest High School to dismiss students at 11:45 a.m.

Buses were available to transport students home and parents received notification via email, according to a school representative.

The outage was caused by squirrel in the Forest Park substation, said Duke Energy Representative Sally Thelen. Residents around Colerain Township and Forest Park were affected.

Thelen says that although Duke installs animal protection equipment on their lines, it's not unusual for creatures to encroach on the substations and cause an outage.

Thelen says power is expected to be restored early Monday afternoon.
