A high school senior threatening to shoot and kill a classmate is what prosecutors say led to a lockdown at Woodward High School earlier this week.

After a lengthy search for a teen allegedly seen with a gun inside Woodward High School, police arrested a 12th-grader Tuesday afternoon, a young man who has no criminal record according to his attorneys.

18-year-old Denzil Payne stood before a judge Wednesday afternoon pleading not guilty to charges of inducing panic, obstructing official business and possession of an illegal weapon on school grounds.

"The defendant allegedly walked up to another student and told him that he had a gun and threatened to shoot that student. He was then confronted by a school resource officer who attempted to stop him. He ran,” said the prosecutor.

Police say Payne ran out of Woodward High but as a precaution the school was placed on lockdown. That's when police found a second weapon along with a little over seven grams of marijuana in the backpack of a second student. That 16-year-old pleaded not guilty to charges of drug trafficking and illegal possession of a weapon on Tuesday.

Those close to Payne say he did not bring a gun to school and that he only ran from police out of fear.

"He doesn't even get in trouble. That is why he has no record like some of these other kids out here. Even my own so no. He is not a bad kid at all and this is just a big misunderstanding,” said Lakisha Hicks. "These different neighborhoods just keep trying to go up against each other. Bond Hill against Avondale. Avondale against Winton Terrace. It's just stupid. Ya'll aint doing nothing but causing your parents grief."

Payne is being held on $21,000 bond. So far this school year, Cincinnati Public School officials say they've confiscated three guns and two tazers.
