Hundreds gathered downtown on Monday morning for the MLK Coalition's 40th annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Day.

This year's theme is “Pass it on: Continuing the Legacy of Dr. King.” A large crowd at 10 a.m. began a one mile march from the Freedom Center to Fountain Square for an interfaith prayer service.

The march continued to Music Hall for an MLK Commemorative Celebration.

Other Tri-State organizations are using Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a day of service. The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and Hoxworth are teaming up for a blood drive. Each donor will receive free admission to the Freedom Center, a free movie ticket to AMC theaters and will be registered for tickets to a UC basketball game.

The blood drive will take place at the Freedom Center until 4:30 p.m.

Other Tri-State events to honor Dr. King:

Church of the Resurrection: In honor of MLK, the church will present an award to “people who have kept the dream of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. alive and well in our community.” The ceremony begins at 3 p.m. at 1619 California Avenue in Bond Hill.

City of Florence's annual MLK Program: The City will acknowledge Dr. King's accomplishments as a civil rights leader and social activist. The program starts at 3 p.m. and will include a display, tribute to Dr. King and a march around the Government Center campus.

Liberty and West Chester Townships' 16th annual observance of Martin Luther King Day: There will be a presentation of essays by student contest winners, keynote speakers Maria McKenzie and Annie Ruth and a community choir. Program is followed by a cookie and punch reception. Starts at 7 p.m. at Cornerstone United Methodist Church.
