MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) -

A medical helicopter responded to  the AK Steel plant late Thursday after a contract worker fell 20 feet into a large open pit, fire officials said.

CareFlight flew the man, who has been identified as Jack Lambert, to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton about 11 p.m.

At the time, the man was considered in stable condition. The extent of his injuries were not released. He is a contract worker, not an AK Steel employee, Middletown Deputy Fire Chief Tom Snively said.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Fire crews said they cleared the scene by midnight.

AK Steel officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
