GOSHEN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

A 33-year-old man died early Thursday after he was pulled from the basement of a burning Goshen Township home.

Benjamin Ledford was unconscious when firefighters rescued him around 7:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of Stella Drive.

He was taken by ambulance to Bethesda North Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A woman and child on the first floor on the home were not injured in the fire. The child ran to a neighboring home while the woman tried to help the man from the basement, officials said.

According to authorities, the juvenile alerted neighbors who called 911 and the adult female attempted to alert Ledford of the fire but she was driven back by intense smoke and heat.

"Crews did confirm with a neighbor that they could hear screams coming from the basement. The basement windows had been broken out but they no longer had contact with the subject in the basement,” said Goshen Township Fire Chief Stephen Pegram.

Officials say a dog was rescued and was transported to a local veterinary hospital for treatment.

Firefighters confirm there is a wood burning stove in the basement but say it's too early to say how the fire started.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire and indicate it started in the basement.

The victim is the 26th person to die in a fire in Ohio so far this year, according to the state fire marshal's office.

Fire fatalities across the state were up a bit last year after they declined in recent years.

In 2014, 115 people died compared to 105 in 2013; 106 in 2012 and 128 in 2011.
