NEWPORT -

It's a Newport project 9 years in the making. Now, we may soon see construction at the Ovation site.

Corporex has plans for a mixed used development that will create 6,700 jobs and bring $1.7 billion to the local economy.

The development includes space for two hotels, office and retail space, townhomes, condos, senior housing units, a 3,500 seat show room and parking spaces.

The development is expected to make a $42 million impact on the region over 30 years. It's designed to bring upscale, waterfront living to families, young professionals and the growing baby boomer population enjoying their retirement years.

There is one obstacle to the development, the expansion of Kentucky 9 to Newport. The first phase of construction on Kentucky 9 is underway. Utility work is happening now on the Southern portion of the roadway with road construction scheduled to begin in the Spring.

The plans are to expand Kentucky 9 to two lanes each direction with sidewalks and bike lanes in portions of the new road. When completed, it will give people easier access to Newport and the Taylor Southgate Bridge.

There are three phases of construction. The second phase is scheduled to begin in the summer. The final phase will begin in 2016, if funding is secured for the project.

Corporex is planning to build during construction of Kentucky 9.
