Kokosing Construction: Engineering mistake may have led to overpass collapse

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -  The CEO of Kokosing Construction Company issued a statement Friday saying that an engineering mistake made by the company may have been a factor in a bridge collapse that killed one of its employees.

These findings come from an internal investigation by Kokosing Construction into the incident. Brian Burgett, CEO, says that the investigation is ongoing and that the recent findings have been shared with OSHA and ODOT.

The company has hired an outside engineering firm to work with its own engineers for future demolition projects.  "While nothing we can do can change the events that happened on January 19, we are taking this additional step to improve the safety of all of our workers and everyone impacted by the construction work we do," Burgett said.

Brandon Carl, 35, was killed January 19 when the old Hopple Street overpass collapsed onto I-75 during demolition work. Carl's parents are suing the state department of transportation for funeral expenses and other unspecified damages.
