Ohio State Highway Patrol investigate single vehicle accident that left one dead, one person fleeing the scene

HIGHLAND COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -

The Wilmington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a single vehicle fatal accident that happened in Highland County Thursday morning.

Officials say the accident happened on State Route 138, near milepost 25, at around 7:47 a.m.

According to the OSHP, a 2005 Ford pick up truck was going southbound on SR-138.  The vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a guardrail. The vehicle continued down an embankment and overturned.

An occupant, Paul Stewart, 32, of Greenfield, Ohio, was ejected from the vehicle.  He was transported to he Highland District Hospital where he later succumbed from his injuries.  

OSHP says another occupant of the vehicle fled the scene on foot after the crash.  Jacob Cowman, 21, of Greenfield, is a person of interest as being the occupant who fled the scene of the crash.

Authorities are still investigating the seating positions in the vehicle at this time.  The use of alcohol and drugs is also under investigation.

Anyone with information about the crash, or who knows the location of Jacob Cowman, is asked to contact your local police department, or the Ohio State Highway Patrol located in Wilmington.
