A woman suffered a minor hand burn and five people were displaced when fire tore through a three-story apartment building on Broadway Street near East 13th Street early Friday.
No other injuries were reported when flames broke out after 2:30 a.m., fire officials said.
Crews initially thought the building was abandoned, but when they arrived they found several residents evacuated into the bitter cold.
They quickly knocked down the bulk of the blaze.
Someone cooking in a third-story apartment earlier in the night may have started the fire, which remains under investigation.
Damage was set at $50,000.
A Metro bus was brought in to shelter residents. The temperature fell to a record low of minus 10 degrees by 3 a.m.
