Butler Co. Coroner: Drug overdoses lead all causes of death in 2014

BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - Butler County Coroner Dr. Lisa Mannix reports that for the first time since the statistics above been kept, natural deaths was not the leading cause of death among the accepted cases in the Coroner's office. She released 2014's causes of death statistics Friday.

Drug overdoses lead all causes of death with 137 deaths, over 75 percent of those were heroin related, Dr. Mannix reports.  Natural deaths was second with 136. 

According to the Dr. Mannix, there were 777 total coroner calls in 2014.  400 of those were total coroner cases and 377 were reference cases.

Total cause of death list from the Butler County Coroner:

  • Drug overdose - 137
  • Natural deaths - 136
  • Suicides - 46
  • Other accidents - 33
  • Motor vehicle traffic accidents - 22
  • Undetermined - 16
  • Homicides - 10
Dr. Mannix says that for the first time since the statistics above been kept, natural deaths was not the leading cause of death among the accepted cases in the Coroner's office.
