CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - It's fish fry season but Friday there was a surprise delivery at one west side church.

What seemed like a normal night working the deep fryer for Tom Gyarmatti, turned into an evening to remember.

"I never expected anything like this," Gyarmatti said.

Years ago, Gyarmatti left high school to serve his country in the Vietnam War. But Friday was given the last piece of a puzzle he's dreamed of completing.

"It was my duty to go in," Gyarmatti said.

"They're just regular people, they don't want the big pat on the back, they're not showboating or anything. They're just here to serve," Elder
principal Tom Otten said.

Otten presented the diploma to Gyarmatti and says they've been honoring veterans in similar situations since Ohio legislation gave high schools this opportunity.

"If you left high school to go serve our country, they qualify for the diploma," Otten said.

Otten adds they've been doing this since 2002 and Friday was extra special.

"It turns out this is our 100th so this is a big night for us," Otten said.

Since he returned from war, Gyarmatti has served his community as the East Price Hill Improvement Association president and now volunteers his time in a variety of ways. Friends at St. William say he's humble, but his actions speak a thousand words.

"This is a thrill to work for them, to help them out, to coach with them, it's just great," said Gyarmatti.
