Musketeers drop to St. Johns for the second time in 10 days

New York, NY (FOX19) - After rocking No. 19 Butler at home by 17 points Saturday, Xavier fell short at Madison Square Garden to St. Johns 58-57 Monday night.

The Musketeers were no match for the Red Storm's Sir'Dominic Pointer's triple-double. Pointer had 19 points, 10 blocks and 11 rebounds.

Xavier built an 11-0 point lead early in the first five minutes of the first half. St. Johns held Xavier to only 20 points in the first half and lead at halftime by eight. 

The Muskies would go on a 17-4 run to open the second half to go up 37-32 with 12 minutes left.

Trevon Bluiett hit back-to-back free throws after getting fouled by Rysheed Jordan and to bring Xavier within one with 25 seconds left. Bluiett had 17 points in the loss. 

Remy Abell then picked D'Angelo Harrison's pocket and the Musketeers called timeout to set up their final play. Myles Davis missed a contested jumper and St. John's secured the rebound.

Abell finished the game with 11 points and five rebounds.

Xavier finished the game shooting 33.30 percent from field goal range.

Harrison led St. Johns with 20 points.

Xavier (18-11, 8-8 Big East) plays No. 6 Villanova (25-2, 12-2 Big East) at the Cintas Center Saturday at 2 p.m.
