Fire alarm cuts short opening statements in ex-radio host's trial

A fire alarm cut short the opening statements in the trial of a former radio host who is accused of shooting his estranged wife.

Blake Selyhouwer, of Madeira, is facing two counts of felonious assault and one count of domestic violence after he allegedly shot his wife Misty after an argument last August. Misty was struck by bullet shrapnel during the incident.

Prosecutors said in their opening statements that the shooting happened after Selyhouwer violated a protection order.

The defense argued that the muzzle of the rifle was pointed up to the sky, something the defense said is the first rule in gun safety.

"The state has to prove the Blake knowingly caused harm to Misty on that day," said Patrick Mulligan, Selyhouwer's attorney. "The evidence is going to show that following rule number one means that Blake intended to harm nobody."

The trial continues Wednesday morning.
