Condoleezza Rice is promising to work to mend relations that have been frayed by the war in Iraq.
In remarks prepared for her confirmation hearing, the president's choice to be the next secretary of state says "the time for diplomacy is now." Rice says US actions following September eleventh, including wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, were "difficult, and necessary and right." She is promising to work to strengthen ties with old and new allies. Rice is expected to have little trouble being confirmed, though Democrats plan tough questioning on a variety of issues.
