United States Senator Mitch McConnell from Kentucky is the longest serving U.S. Senator in Kentucky history. He is the 15th Senate Republican Leader and the second Kentuckian to lead his party in the Senate.

He has been the Majority Leader of the Senate since Jan. 3. 

McConnell became U.S. Senator after defeating two-term Democratic Walter Dee Huddleston in 1984. Since then, McConnell has won races against Harvey Sloane (1990), Steve Beshear (1996), Lois Combs Weinberg (2002), Bruce Lunsford (2008) and Alison Lundergan Grimes (2014).
