COPY-Documents show Hopple Street demolition plan

Documents released by the Ohio Department of Transportation and Kokosing Construction show last-minute changes made to the demolition plan for the Hopple Street Overpass.

The I-75 overpass collapsed Jan. 19 as crews were preparing to demolish it as part of a highway widening project.

Bandon Carl, a 35-year-old construction worker from Ausgusta, Kentucky, was killed in the accident.

Contractor Kokosing Construction Company of Columbus, ODOT and federal authorities with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration all have launched separate investigations.

Details into the investigation and cause of the collapse have yet to be released.

Local bridge and construction expert James Swanson, an associate professor of civil engineering at the University of Cincinnati, says one of the least stable times for bridges is during construction or deconstruction.

When the bridge is in service and all the pieces are working together as a system, they are very safe. But when you start taking pieces away, if you don't do it in the right sequence, if you don't do it properly, then individual parts become unstable and can lead to a collapse like we saw," said Swanson.
