HIGHLAND HEIGHTS (FOX19) -

A Highland Heights mother said her 5-year-old son shot his 2-year-old sister in the head, according to 911 audio released on Friday.

The girl is in critical condition at Cincinnati Children's Hospital after being shot Monday afternoon inside a Bon Jan Lane home.

“My son got the keys to the gun cabinet and shot his little sister,” the woman says in the call.

Police only confirmed that the child's mother and sibling were home at the time of the shooting and never said who they believe had fired the weapon.

The girl was lying in front of a closed gun case when first responders arrived around 2:15 p.m., according to the incident report. She was unconscious but breathing.

”We keep the keys locked up, we [unintelligible] the keys on top of the fridge. I'm not sure how he got them,” the woman says to 911 dispatchers.

The mother and son were interviewed separately at the Children's Advocacy Network.

The incident remains under investigation and police have indicated they're looking at this as an accidental shooting case.
