Crews investigate fatal fire in Highland County

HIGHLAND COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -

U.S. 50 is currently closed in Allensburg (Highland County), as crews investigate a fatal fire.

Firefighters were called to an active structure fire in Allensburg on U.S. 50 just east of S.R. 135 around 4:15 a.m. Saturday.

According to officials, first responders found a house heavily engulfed in flames. Firefighters were forced from the structure and not able to make an interior attack due to the flames issuing from all sides of the building and the instability of the structure.

Deputies from the Highland County Sheriff's Department confirmed that four of the five occupants were accounted for and not inside the house at the time of the fire.

The unaccounted individual has died according to Paint Creek/ Lynchburg Joint Fire & EMS. The victim's identity is being held until family notification.

The case is being investigated by the Ohio Fire Marshal's Office.

Officials say U.S. 50 will be closed indefinitely.
