CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Runners had a beautiful Saturday morning with no so beautiful temperatures for the St. Vincent de Paul 5K.

People at Sawyer Point were using space blankets and even bear bugs to stay warm before participating.

“It's freezing it's as cold as it looks,” said Adam Schwager of Cincinnati.

People braved those temperatures to support St. Vincent de Paul. An organization that says it's on the front lines of poverty.

“We are helping out with people getting medicine, food from our pantries, help with people's rent and utilities, all sorts of things,” said Kristen Klein.

Klein is the Director of Development at St. Vincent de Paul and says last year they helped about 125,000 people through their rent and utilities assistance programs.

Through their thrift store, Klein says they have given out more than a half million dollars in furniture, clothing and household goods.

St. Vincent de Paul asked its participants to bring things like toilet paper. They say it's these essential everyday items their clients need the most.

“Personal care items are often really tough to get. Families just struggling to put food on the table, putting extra dollars to personal care items can really be a struggle so we want to help out with that,” Klein said.

Most participants took their time during the race, while a few focused on speed.

“Just want to finish as fast as possible so I might be setting my own personal record today,” Schwager said.

No matter what the time on the clock read when participants finished, all racers were satisfied knowing they'd helped St. Vincent de Paul's need.
