COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Watch for heavy smoke from a controlled burn Monday at Devou Park Sleepy Hollow Field.

Covington firefighters and its urban forestry division are burning 3.8 acres of native grasses and forbs 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"The event will create a lot of smoke," city officials warn in a statement.

Burning this area will help with the management of this grassland community by reducing invasion of trees and shrubs, removing excess leaf litter that can inhibit vegetative growth and wildlife use, releasing seed for germination and controlling disease, city officials said.

The site to be burned is in a fairly isolated area with few homes. These properties have been contacted and individually briefed.
