MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) -

A mother and a 'family friend' have been indicted on charges of physically abusing a mentally handicapped boy.

According to court documents, a Middletown police officer responded to the residence of Evelyn Elza-Duckworth on Jan. 29 after her son did not arrive to school.

Police said Justin Walton came to the door and refused to answer any questions telling the officer he was just a friend of the family. The officer asked Walton to see the boy. Court documents said the officer noticed bruising on the face of the child.

A police investigation showed the boy had bruising throughout his body.

Walton is indicted on two counts of child endangering, and Elza-Duckworth is charged with child endangering and obstruction of justice. Elza-Duckworth's three children have been removed from her care.

The two are expected to be back in court April 21.
