CINCINNATI (FOX19) -

The family of Daryl Gordon released a statement Thursday thanking the community for “the outpouring of kindness and support” following the Cincinnati firefighter's tragic death during a rescue mission in a burning Madisonville apartment building.

"On behalf of the family of Daryl Eugene Gordon we would like to extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude for the outpouring of kindness and support we received during this devastating time.

Daryl was the epitome of what a husband, father, brother, and family man should be. He never met a stranger and once he met you, he was a true friend and you became a part of his extended family. If you ever had a chance to know him or meet him, you knew he was special. To the Firefighters of Local 48, UC Health - Aircare and Mobile Care, members of the International Association of Firefighters, The Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and our friends in law enforcement, we sincerely appreciate all the love and support you have expressed to the family.

Through his life, his legacy of serving the community and his devotion to his family and friends, will serve as an example for all of us, and will shine in our hearts forever," the statement reads.

Gordon is the first Cincinnati firefighter to die in the line of duty in 12 years.

Hundreds lined the streets of Cincinnati Wednesday to pay their final respects to Gordon as is funeral procession traveled downtown to St. Peter in Chains Cathedral and then to Oak Hill Cemetery in Springdale.

Gordon's two daughters and wife, Angela, walked in the procession behind the flag-draped casket on Engine 14, which the firefighter drove most of his 30-year career.

A hero's sendoff: "Daryl died doing what he loved."
