(FOX19) -

Billions of dollars go unclaimed in America.  One out of every 600 people are the beneficiaries of unclaimed life insurance polices.

The average unclaimed insurance benefit is $2,000, but some recipients have found as much as $300,000. On top of that insurance money, states are holding $42 billion in unclaimed funds from abandoned bank accounts, safe deposit boxes, payroll and dividend checks, even utility company deposits.

Here's how you can do your own search.

Start with missingmoney.com. You can search under every state there. Make sure you use your maiden name, too.  It can't hurt to also check the unclaimed money sites for individual states you've lived in.

Here are some of the other sites you can use:

Indiana Treasury Unclaimed Money: https://indianaunclaimed.gov/apps/ag/ucp/index.html

Kentucky Treasury Unclaimed Property: https://secure.kentucky.gov/treasury/unclaimedproperty/default.aspx

Ohio Division of Unclaimed Funds: http://www.com.ohio.gov/unfd/
