BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -

Two kayakers rescued from a Butler County river Friday are facing charges.

The Butler County Sheriff's Office says they were dispatched at approximately 11:55 a.m. to the area of the 2600 block of Hamilton Eaton Road for two men trapped on a small land area in the middle of the creek that runs between Seven Mile and New Miami.

According to officials, 27-year-old Jeffrey Marcum and 22-year-old Christopher Marcum were in separate kayaks in the river when they lost control due to extremely heavy currents and had to swim to safety.  One of them had a phone and called a family member, who called the Sheriff's Office.

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones says the two were rescued by the Sheriff's helicopter and Air Care.

One subject was transported by Saint Clair Township emergency crews and the other by Air Care for minor injuries.

“This is absolutely ridiculous. The current in that river could have cost several lives to try to rescue two people that should have known better. I am all for rescuing those in need; that is why I have all these resources. I do not like putting my own people or anyone else in danger when something like this could have been prevented," Sheriff Jones said in a release.

Both subjects are being charged with reckless or unsafe operation of vessel, a third degree misdemeanor.
