CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Installation of a $1 million carousel began Tuesday morning at Smale Riverfront Park.

The hand-carved "Carol Ann's Carousel" will take about a week to erect inside a $4.5 million building that also will hold a banquet and conference center.

Building is well underway with glass walls and roofing all in place just west of the Roebling Suspension Bridge along the central riverfront off Mehring Way.

Project officials say the carousel is on schedule to open May 16.

It will feature three rows of animals for a total of 44 characters based on input from citizens.

The carousel will operate year-round and be available at a nominal cost. It also will be available for private rentals for birthday parties, weddings and both corporate/civic and family functions.

The entire complex of the carousel, Anderson Pavilion, plazas, water features, comfort station and Vine Street steps/cascades are privately funded.

Other park features coming soon include Great Adventure Playground May 9.
