Meet the local man at the center of the Supreme Court gay marriage cases

Whether gay and lesbian couples nationwide have the constitutional right to marry began in the Tri-State began with lead plaintiff Jim Obergefell, 48, of Over-the-Rhine.

The real estate agent wants the state of Ohio to legally recognize his marriage to John Arthur. They married in a state where gay marriage is legal, Maryland, with Arthur in the final stages of Lou Gehrig's disease, but the state refused to recognize it.

The nation's high court will begin hearing his case April 28, along with several other same sex marriage cases from Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Michigan. All of the cases are listed under Obergefell's since his was filed first.
