The Butler County Coroner released statistics Wednesday showing the grim reality of a growing heroin epidemic.
60 of the 119 cases Coroner Lisa Mannix investigated in the first four months of the year were drug overdose deaths. Of those 60 overdoses, 56 are heroin-related.
Only 25 percent of deaths investigated were heroin-related during the same time last year, according to the coroner.
2014 was the first year in Butler County that statistics showed drug overdoses to be the leading cause of death among cases accepted by the coroner's office.
