NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) -

Police helped residents escape a Monroe Street house fire early Wednesday.

Crews were called to the residence about 5:30 a.m., according to emergency communication reports.

Greg Sanders said he was already up and shaving when flames broke out in a window box outside the home.

His wife and son also were home.

"It's very weird to have police tell you your house is on fire," he told FOX19 NOW.

Flames engulfed the second story before firefighters quickly knocked it out. No one was hurt.

Investigators have determined the cause of the fire was a cigarette in a plant on the porch of the house.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
