Mother pleads guilty to her toddler's death

The mother accused of smothering her 15-month-old toddler pleaded guilty to three charges on Wednesday.

Janishcia Cottingham was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, child endangering and felonious assault in connection to her daughter's death.

She was immediately sentenced to 20 years in prison.

On Aug. 15, 2013, police were called to Bowling Green Court in Millvale for a toddler not breathing. Robin Cottingham was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Hamilton County Coroner's Office ruled the death a homicide.

Robin's father, Robert Midell, said the toddler was previously handed over to Jobs and Family Services, only to have the child returned to Janishcia. JFS workers said Cottingham never officially had custody of Robin, and passed a mental evaluation before the child returned to her care.
