Some Cincinnati city pools might not open on time later this season due to a lifeguard shortage.

Four pools are expected to open Memorial Day weekend May 23-25, and 20 more facilities are set to open June 2.

The Cincinnati Recreation Commission is short 75 lifeguards.

State law dictates a certain number of lifeguards must be present at public pools.

Recreation officials said they hope to get those positions quickly filled.

"We've been working diligently at our recruitment, but it's just difficult this year," said Jincey Yemaya, the recreation commission's aquatic director.

Lifeguards must be at least 15 years old. Positions begin paying at $9.23 hourly.

A lifeguard training course is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Mt. Auburn Indoor Pool, 2034 Young St.
