Did you know lightning kills an average of 49 people each year in the U.S.?
Lightning often strikes more than three miles from the center of the thunderstorm, far outside the rain or thunderstorm cloud, so even if isn't raining, getting an alert well ahead of the storm could save your life.
We're thrilled to introduce lightning alerts sent directly to your iPhone, iPad or Android device on the new FOX19 Weather NOW app. Any time lightning strikes within five miles of your location, a message will pop up on your screen and your device will play an alert. This way, you can stay on top of the latest weather conditions, no matter where you are in the Tri-State.
Do you want to receive real-time lightning alerts? Push lightning alerts are available, not for a fixed location but where ever you are in the FOX19 NOW viewing area. That means if you are at a baseball game or soccer match you will be notified of lightning that is nearby.
It's part of our commitment to keeping you safe and informed as you go about your day.
To make sure you get real-time lightning alerts:
1. Tap the city at the center of the top bar to take you to the "LOCATIONS" screen.
2. Set your "HOME" location to "Use Current Location"
3. Look at the images to be sure you have it right.
Don't forget to check out the new Lightning layer on the map section of the app. With this layer, you can see which storms are producing lightning, as well as the location of the strikes. Just tap the "Layers" button and tap the "Lightning" button.
From the MAP screen you can post to social media, change data layers, turn the precipitation key on and off and quickly access the home screen again.
We hope you like the new FOX19 Weather NOW app, it is available from Google Play and the Apple App Store for free.
