An Army veteran who smashed the windows from a car is being called a good samaritan for the act that got him arrested.

Michael Hammons said it was a hot day when he spotted a dog inside a Mustang parked at a Georgia shopping center over the weekend. Hammons claimed the dog appeared to be in distress and reportedly used the footrest of a wheelchair to smash the car windows.

The owner of the car insisted Hammons be arrested, deputies said. He was charged with criminal trespassing for the incident.

Georgia state law allows an individual to break a car window to save a child, but the same protection does not apply for pets, the AP points out.

The driver was cited for leaving the dog in the hot car.
