FOX19 - No, you're not hallucinating. Google's self-driving cars will hit the road this summer.
The company announced on its blog the first self-driving cars will roll onto roads near Google's headquarters in northern California.
Google said in the blog post, the prototype vehicles will have a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour. The vehicles will also have safety drivers aboard with a removable steering wheel, accelerator pedal and brake pedal that will allow them to take over driving if necessary.
According to the post, the goal of Google's Self-Driving Car Project is to learn how the community perceives and interacts with the vehicles and “uncovering challenges that are unique to a fully self-driving vehicle, e.g. where it should stop if it can't stop at its exact destination due to construction or congestion. In the coming years, we'd like to run small pilot programs with our prototypes to learn what people would like to do with vehicles like this.”
