Breast milk vs. formula: Which is best for babies?

How to nurture one's infant is a choice every mother makes.

Though formula is a healthful alternative, breast milk has long been considered the best option by experts. And it's an option being increasingly adopted and sought out by those unable to breastfeed on their own-- all of which has led to an increase in the demand for breast milk donations.

According to WomensHealth.gov, breastfeeding protects your baby from illness through the cells, hormones and antibodies present.

Research suggests that breastfed babies have lower risks of:

  • Asthma
  • Childhood leukemia
  • Childhood obesity
  • Ear infections
  • Eczema (atopic dermatitis)
  • Diarrhea and vomiting
  • Lower respiratory infections
  • Necrotizing enterocolitis, a disease that affects the gastrointestinal tract in pre-term infants;
  • Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
  • Type 2 diabetes
