Mardis Gras

Annual carnival season now in full swing

Mardis Gras events competed with the Super Bowl on Sunday, but with the game over, the annual pre-Lenten revelry is in full swing.

In New Orleans, the annual Bacchus Parade rolled through the city with a bevy of floats depicting different NFL teams. Some merchants and bar owners in the Crescent City complained about smaller than normal crowds. Mardis Gras is falling about two weeks earlier than usual because of the calendar. It's also too far from spring break to attract college-age crowds. Still, bars on Bourbon Street were festive, and crowds could pick up before the annual carnival wraps up Tuesday night.

At Camp Liberty in western Baghdad, Louisiana National Guard soldiers donned purple, green and gold, transformed Army trucks into floats and pelted troops with colorful beads, coins and candies.
