Campaign urges Americans to #GoSilent for Memorial Day

A social media campaign is urging Americans to remember the meaning of Memorial Day and observe a moment of silence for fallen military service members.

Participants pledge to #GoSilent on Memorial Day and then observe the moment of silence Monday at 12:01 p.m. ET.

Memorial Day for some means a day off work, backyard cookouts and the unofficial start to the summer season. Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America started the #GoSilent movement to keep the true meaning of Memorial Day from fading.

“As summer begins, everyone is focused on barbeques, beaches and going to the mall,” said IAVA representative Mark Szymanski to the Huffington Post. “This is a time when we can reflect on the service members we have lost.”

The 12:01 p.m. moment of silence will coincide with the wreath-laying at Arlington National Cemetery.

Whether you know someone who has died serving our country or if you simply want to express your thanks for the sacrifice, take the #GoSilent pledge on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
