COLD SPRING, KY (FOX19) -

This Northern Kentucky community has a new police chief after an overhaul.

Brian Messer will be promoted from inside the police department to the position of chief June 1, officials announced Wednesday.

Cold Spring's former mayor, Nancy Bay, fired former chief Ed Burk after she won the mayoral election over Mark Stoebber. But Bay suddenly resigned last month, and Stoebber was sworn in as interim mayor.

Stoebber pledged to quickly find a new chief and said Messer was a natural fit.

"He has an exceptional background with the Cold Spring Police Department," said Stoebber. "To promote from with is a testament to the quality of our department and individual officer effort."

Messer has worked for the police department 16 years.
