BATAVIA, OH (FOX19) - Family and friends are bidding farewell Friday to a fire service veteran who collapsed while fighting a fire.

The funeral for Williamsburg Township Fire Lieutenant David Knapke began at 10 a.m. at Clear Mountain Community Church, 4050 Tollgate Rd., Batavia.

The 55-year-old man collapsed and went into cardiac arrest while responding to Mt.Orab fire May 30.

He had to be resuscitated at the scene.

He was taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was put on life support for several days.

Fire officials announced his death early Saturday on Facebook.

Knapke had been with the fire department for more than 30 years.

"Today and tomorrow we will be honoring the life of a man who has given so much to the fire and ems service, particularly in Clermont County. David would be humbled to see the support," fire officials posted on the agency's Facebook page Thursday. "Please join us in honoring David. If you can not be there, honor him with your thoughts and prayers for his family.

"The members of Williamsburg Township Fire/EMS cannot begin to express our thanks for all of the love and support we have been given. May eternal peace be granted unto you, David. We have it from here, Brother."
