CRITTENDEN, KY (FOX19) -

Kentucky State Police have identified the suspect who was shot and wounded by a Grant County deputy on Monday.

Shane D. Propes, 22, opened fire at the deputy with a rifle after authorities responded to a report of an armed man outside a Crittenden residence, according to KSP. The incident happened at Indian Hill Estates trailer park on Indian Hills Drive about 9 p.m.

When the deputy and another officer arrived, Propes fired several shots at the deputy and moved to several different locations while shooting.

Authorities said the deputy returned fire and hit Propes at least once.

James E. Benton, the suspect's grandfather, said the deputy did what he had to do to defend his life.

"I would have done the same thing if it had been me," Benton said.

Benton said his grandson broke into his house Monday afternoon and stole a fully loaded AR-15, a handgun and a rifle. The man said the suspect is on drugs and not thinking straight.

Propes was taken to Grant County Park, where an AirCare helicopter picked him up and flew him to University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He is currently listed in stable condition.

The shooting remains under investigation by KSP. Detectives will meet with the Commonwealth Attorney's Office to discuss pending charges against Propes.
