NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) -

The former Newport High School football coach and athletic director pleaded guilty to one count of possession of marijuana.

Matthew Schmitz, 33, was given probation, 100 hours of community service and was ordered to undergo drug treatment for marijuana abuse.

Police say Schmitz was passed out in his car last month with the motor running when an officer spotted him in the Newport Radio Shack. A marijuana cigarette was found in the center console of his car according to investigators.

Schmitz's attorney confirmed with FOX19 NOW the former coach will be back in court in October for a compliance hearing. Court documents show that if Schmitz completes his programs the marijuana charge will be expunged from his record.
