In the past two centuries, 98 Cincinnati police officers have made the ultimate sacrifice by dying in the line of duty.

On Friday, Cincinnati Police District 2 Officer Sonny Kim joined that grim list.

The last was Officer Kevin Crayon, 40, who was killed in the early morning hours of Sept. 1, 2000.

Crayon had just finished his dinner break and was back on duty when he when he spotted a 12-year-old behind the wheel of a car in the parking lot of a United Dairy Farmers store on Colerain Avenue near West North Bend Road.

The officer reached into the car and tried to grab the key from the ignition stop Courtney Mathis from backing into a family nearby.

The boy sped onto Colerain Avenue toward West North Bend Road, dragging the officer from the car at a high rate of speed and zigzagging back and forth across the road.

Crayon managed to free his right hand, drew his firearm and, in a final attempt to try to save his life, fired one shot, striking Mathis in the chest.

Crayon fell to the road, slid and hit a stopped 1995 Cadillac at the intersection. The impact instantly killed him.

Mathis died at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Other in-the-line-of-duty deaths:

  • Officer Daniel Pope and Specialist Ronald Jeter, gunned down by a suspect Dec. 6, 1997
  • Officer Clifford George, shot by a suspect on Vine Street April 16, 1987
