Guest Blog: What I learned at the Vectren Dayton Air Show 2015

[FOX19 NOW staffer Kris Nuss took to the skies over the weekend at the Vectren Dayton Air Show. Check out Kris' previous blogs about her adventures: Dramamine for breakfast, Misadventures at the Dayton Air Show and Flying in a B-25 War Plane]

What I learned at the Vectren Dayton Air Show 2015

-Look up and find wonder in the world!

-Look out and around and be delighted at what you see.

-Thank a veteran who endured for us. Don't take their service lightly; some wounds aren't visible.

-Volunteer at the DAV if you can; they'd love the help.

-Don't bump the stick in a highly tuned aerobatics plane. Seriously, don't do this.

-The little button on the stick of the Oracle Extra 300L is a transmittable microphone, not the trigger to a gun. No amount of fantasizing will change this. It was a media flight, not a dog fight.

-Be prepared, bring Dramamine, tuck your shirt in, and bring a bag, just in case. But you won't need them-“You'll be outstanding!”

-Thank the people along your way; contacts who put you in the seat, the guy who provides the booster seat, the pilots you ferry you safely, the people who show you how to use a parachute, the people who cart you around and bring you water. Chances are, they have better things to do than babysit me.

-Wear your parachute proudly. Everyone needs to feel secure occasionally.

-Share your crackers and Dramamine with other people. It's a great way to make new friends.

-Be a mentor to someone, and give back. But don't let me be a mentor, I'm an idiot.

-Don't be embarrassed to be afraid of heights, or have a fear of flying. Some of the Golden Knights don't particularly appreciate heights without a parachute.

-Always wear hearing protection on a B-25. Always. Not even kidding.

-Don't freak out if plans go awry-sometimes, it works out better, like being cooped up in a small plane with Army men.

-Avoid selfies at low angles. They produce up the nose, highly unattractive shots.

-“Life is an adventure. You're going to have lots of ups and downs. There are so many highs in life, don't focus on the lows.” –pilot Matt Younkin

-Don't puke outside the plane. No good can come from this. Thus says the Golden Knights.

-“Flying is a privilege; it's a lot of fun, an exhilarating feeling.” –pilot Matt Younkin

-Don't be afraid to ask stupid questions-sometimes, they can be a lot of fun.

-Don't freak out at the smell of burning oil or if the paraffin smoke fills the cockpit.

-Always bring duct tape.

-Tidy up your desk in case you're flying in Dayton but the Brietling Jet Team from France pops into your station in Cincinnati and visits your desk. I still can't believe this.

-When I die and make the trip to Heaven, I hope it's just like the ride I took with Sean D. Tucker-beautiful, glorious, breathtaking, and freeing.

-“Have courage!!” –Sean's advice to anyone who might be afraid to fly.
