City Council votes NO to spending extra $2 million on streetcar operations

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Cincinnati city council has voted no on spending $2 million more to operate the streetcar.

The vote was 5 to 4.

On Tuesday, council had 5 votes to approve the measure, but in a surprising move, Councilman Wendell Young, who voted yes in committee yesterday, voted no Wednesday.

The Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority, or SORTA, will now decide who will operate the streetcar system.

Two options are on the table. Union workers, or a private company. SORTA has called an 8 a.m. board meeting on Monday to most likely decide between the two.

Tempers flared from some councilmembers after the vote took place.

"I think there is a way, there has been a way, and there continues to be a way forward where we don't spend 90-percent of our time, debating this effin' streetcar," said councilmember Chris Seelbach.
