Finally, the game everyone's been waiting to see. USA put together a great effort and beat Germany 2-0 in the semifinals of the World Cup in Montreal.
Americans were nervous going into this game because Germany was dominating teams and the U.S. had not played it's best soccer in the World Cup. It didn't seem that way Tuesday night.
The big star of the night was Carli Lloyd. She played her best game of the tournament, scoring a goal and assisting on the second. Lloyd's US goal came after Alex Morgan was fouled at the top of the penalty box. It was her third goal of the tournament. She was also named player of the match for the third consecutive game.
The USA's defense finally showed some cracks Tuesday night. Defender Julie Johnston was trying to chest down the soccer ball in the own box, when Germany's Alexandra Popp saw it as a goal-scoring opportunity. Johnston pulled on Popp's shoulder with her hand, causing a foul to be called and a yellow card to Johnston.
Celia Sasic, the leading scorer in the tournament, took the penalty kick. Sasic missed wide left in the 60th minute, Germany's first miss of a penalty kick during a Women's World Cup match.
Nine minutes later, Carli Lloyd scored for the U.S. off a penalty kick and substitute Kelley O'Hara scored in the 84th minute off Lloyd's cross to seal the U.S. team's 2-0 victory.
The Americans move on to the final Sunday night. They'll be favored to beat Japan and if they play half as good as they did Tuesday, they'll win their third World Cup! Of course you can watch the game on FOX19 Now and tweet along with the digital outlaws using #WorldCupNOW. Go USA!
