The contract to operate Cincinnati's streetcar was awarded Monday to Transdev Services, Inc.
The Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority, or SORTA, board approved the turnkey contract to the company that operates rail and transit services across the country, including the New Orleans streetcar.
Under the contract, Transdev would provide the streetcar management, operations and maintenance personnel. The company would bring in all its own employees and begin work later this month.
The proposed turnkey contract was met with controversy.
The Amalgamated Transit Union and the local AFL-CIO branch attempted to stop the vote, seeking a temporary restraining order—that was denied.
The unions were also seeking an injunction and that request may still go forward. They have until a hearing Tuesday morning to decide.
