Girl Escapes Kidnapper

Police say a ten-year-old Owensboro girl is uninjured after escaping from a would-be attacker who grabbed her as she was walking to school.  Forty-five-year-old Jerry Debruler has been charged with kidnapping in the incident, which occured about a block away from the girl's school, Owensboro Catholic's campus for grades four through six.  Police Captain David Thompson says if the girl had not escaped from the man, there's no telling what might have taken place.  He said she had the presence to remain calm and wait for her opportunity to escape.

A man wearing a mask and gloves grabbed her from behind, picked her up by her backpack and dragged her into the back yard of a nearby vacant house.  She slipped the backpack off and ran.  Debruler was taken into custody after an attempted robbery the same morning.  The suspect is a registered sex offender who pleaded guilty to attempted rape in 1981 and again in 1991.  He was sentenced to five years in prison on the most recent conviction.
