MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) -

A 62-year-old woman is dead and 10 others, including 9 children, were hospitalized when a van coming from a Bible school collided with a train Tuesday night.

A front seat passenger in the van, Jan Martin, died shortly after she was taken to Atrium Medical Center, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The westbound 2002 Ford Passenger van ran through the crossing gate on Fourteenth Avenue west of University Boulevard and hit the side of an approaching southbound CSX train about 6:45 p.m., troopers said.

The crossing gate was down and the lights were flashing, but authorities suspect the driver of the van, Judith Ashley, 62, of Middletown, was somehow distracted.

The train stopped at the crossing before proceeding at 2 mph when the van hit it.

Nine children ranging in age from 7 to 10 were riding in the van and hurt. All suffered non-life threatening injuries and are expected to recover.

Ashley and seven of the children were taken to Atrium Medical Center. They are listed in good condition, official said early Wednesday.

The other two youngsters went to Cincinnati Children's Hospital in Liberty Township.
