BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -

Lightning caused a massive fuel tank to explode at a Butler County gas station Monday.

The explosion left an 8-feet deep and 40-feet wide crater at Gas Depot in the 4800 block of Dixie Highway.

Fairfield officials used foam to battle the blaze. Residents in the the surrounding half-mile area were evacuated as a precaution.

"In my 45 year career, I've never seen anything like this," said Fairfield Fire Chief Donald Bennet.

Two of the 10,000-gallon underground tanks contained gas and the other had diesel. Officials believe the diesel tank ignited.

Crews will work Tuesday to assess safety concerns and drain the remaining fuel from the tanks.

“The second the crash happened the smoke, the black smoke just boiled into the air and I knew it was close,” said nearby resident Roger Tucker.

No one was injured in the incident.
